Preface
In 2015, Shenzhen planned to build a new university to serve the regional economic and social development. In August, relevant leaders of the municipal government approached me to discuss how to build this university, and planned to designate me to the important task of leading the project. Despite that I have worked in universities for more than 20 years, I was not quite sure how to build a new university, which was the first one of its kind in China. Over the next six months, the full support and decisive decision-making of the city leaders gave me great motivation. How to run this new university well? Who will be trained in the school and how will it be trained? With these questions, we started this journey of exploration.
After more than a year of investigations, and after extensively listening to various opinions and suggestions, we finally decided to position the school as an application-oriented university dedicated to training undergraduates and professionals, and a high-tech industrial environment based in the Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao Bay Area, a university that vigorously introduces advanced experience in applied higher education worldwide.
In December 2016, the Shenzhen Technology University in preparation held the first High-level Vocational Education System and Made in China 2025 Strategy and German Industry 4.0 Symposium. During this meeting, I was fortunate to meet Professor Thomas Fuhrmann, vice president of the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences. He praised the prospective construction of such a university in Shenzhen and agreed with the school's philosophy. Prof. Thomas Fuhrmann discussed with me how to carry out in-depth cooperation between the two schools, and communicated on how to maximize the resource advantages of both parties based on the existing conditions and foundations. After months of researchesand demonstrations, we reached a consensus on cooperation. Prof. Thomas Fuhrmann recommended to me Professor Holger Haldenwang, who agreed to join our preparation team and has served as a consultant so far. After he came to Shenzhen Technology University, he had several communication and detailed discussions with Dean Lyu Qitao of the Sino-German College of Intelligent Manufacturing, and finally decided to set up a process control laboratory as a starting point for the cooperation between the two universities. With the introduction of Prof. Holger Haldenwang, after New Year's Day in 2018, Mr. Siegfried Schrammel came to Shenzhen Technology University as an engineer representative of the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences. With the full support and leadership of the management of the Sino-German College of Intelligent Manufacturing, he worked with Shen Wenjing to jointlybuild the beer process control laboratory. Mr. Siegfried Schrammel provided comprehensive guidance on the raw materials, equipment, and operation processes required for the experiment, and applied process control principles to beer brewing, integrated knowledge transfer with industrial production, thus cultivating students' practical ability, analytical skills and professional thinking.
On January 25, 2018, the Sino-German beer brewing process control laboratory was inaugurated and put into use. It became the 25th laboratory built by the school and the first laboratory jointly built by China and Germany. The inauguration, as a landmark achievement of Sino-German cooperation in running schools, is a perfect combination of Shenzhen Speed and German quality, which is of great significance for promoting Sino-foreign cooperation in running schools and accelerating the development of the Sino-German College of Intelligent Manufacturing. The teaching method and teaching mode of integrating practice into the classroom is fully affirmed and highly valued by leaders at all levels, and is more welcomed by students. It marks that the Sino-German joint laboratory has taken a substantial step, which has strengthened confidence and provided valuable experience for us to explore and strengthen cooperation with foreign applied technology universities in the future.
I think we will continue to uphold the "practice-based, application-oriented" school philosophy. On the basis of previous success, we will continue this special laboratory modelandpromote more Sino-foreign cooperation projects in various colleges. We will set the characteristic laboratory of Shenzhen Technology University as the benchmark and leader of for Sino-foreign cooperation laboratories!
